All Grades Distinguished!

The 6th, 7th and 8th grade orchestras performed at the KMEA Orchestra Assessment on 3/21 and 3/22.

The 6th grade orchestra received straight Distinguished Ratings from all four judges – they were 2 points away from a perfect score!

The 7th grade orchestra received straight Distinguished Ratings from all four judges – they were 1 point shy from a perfect score!

The 8th grade orchestra received straight Distinguished Ratings from all four judges and a perfect score!

Week of 3/20-3/24

There is a lot going on this week!

  1. We will begin collecting Cookie Dough orders today! Please bring them in ASAP!
  2. 7th and 6th grade will be going to KMEA Assessment at BSHS tomorrow.
    1. Remember your instrument (cello/bass check for rock stops), and your own personal music.
    2. Must be dressed in the appropriate concert attire: Black dress pants, black dress shoes and orchestra polo.
  3. 8th grade will be going to KMEA Assessment at BSHS on Wednesday. See above.
  4. FIM will meet on Wednesday.
  5. Recruitment orchestra will have a final rehearsal on Thursday 4-5pm; all students must attend.
  6. Recruitment orchestra will have their first performance at Northern and Maxwell on Friday.
  7. All Kings Island Permission Slips and fees are due 3/31.
  8. The first practice card for the 4th quarter is due 3/31.

This past weekend we had over 200 students from Fayette Co, Clark Co and Woodford Co audition to be selected for one of two Honors ensembles. We had 12 students selected and 3 alternates!

Week of 3/6-3/10

  1. Our Spring Fundraiser has begun! Make sure to sell Cookie Dough to help make money for our program so we can buy new music, music stands, etc. Orders are due March 20th.
  2. 6th Grade will have a full rehearsal tomorrow, 3/7, during 7th and 8th period to work on concert pieces and sight-reading. Please bring your concert instruments to school.
  3. Friends in Music will meet Wednesday, 3/8.
  4. Recruitment orchestra will be rehearsing Thursday, 3/9 from 4-5pm.
  5. Our March Scale Madness Challenge begins on Thursday, 3/9! Make sure you’re practicing your scales!
  6. KMEA Assessment permission slips are due 3/10.
  7. We will have a practice session Friday, 3/10 from 8-8:45am open to all students.
  8. Students auditioning for honors orchestra will perform for class Friday, 3/10. All other students will not need their instruments that day.
  9. Honors Orchestra auditions are Saturday, 3/11 at BSMS. Good luck to our 31 students who are auditioning this Saturday!

Week of 2/21-2/24

  7. There will be a practice session this Friday open to all students, 8-8:45am.

Week of 2/13-2/17

  1. Please remember to submit practice cards – there are 4 weeks left to do so in this quarter.
  2. All Honors Orchestra forms and fees must be turned in tomorrow, 2/14.
  3. Recruitment rehearsal will be tomorrow, 2/14, from 4-5pm.

2015-2016 Achievements

The 2015-2016 school year has flown by!! We began the year strong in October with our “Music from Around the World” concert featuring the 6th, 7th and 8th grade orchestras.

In November, we had 24 Solos and Ensembles participate in the Kentucky Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Festival. The students received 3 Proficient Solos, 14 Distinguished Solos, 5 Distinguished Duets, 1 Distinguished Trio and 1 Distinguished Quartet, for a total of 3 Proficient Ratings and 21 Distinguished Ratings.

In December, Mrs. Payne welcomed Olivia Rose Payne into the world and Mrs. Norris took over while Mrs. Payne was out on maternity leave.

In March, the 6th, 7th and 8th grade orchestras participated in the Kentucky Music Educators Association Orchestra Assessment. The 6th Grade Orchestra participated as an “Easy” level and received Straight Distinguished Ratings (4 total). The 7th Grade Orchestra participated as a “Medium” level and received Straight Distinguished Ratings, including one Distinguished+ Rating. The 8th Grade Orchestra participated as a “Difficult” level and received Straight Distinguished Ratings including two Distinguished+ Ratings.

In April, we had students audition for the KMEA District 7 MS Honors Orchestra. We had the following students accepted:

In May, we completed the year with our final “Pops” Concert and Award Ceremony. The following students received special awards:

Students from the 6th, 7th and 8th grade orchestra competed at the Music in the Parks Festival at Kentucky Kingdom. The orchestra received 1st place in their class with a score of 99/100 and received the Best Overall Orchestra Award.

It has been a fabulous year, and we look forward to another great year ahead!!
