The Orchestra

The Bryan Station Middle School Orchestras are under the direction of Mrs. Sarah Payne. There are currently 5 orchestra classes at BSMS that make up various string ensembles throughout the school year. All of the BSMS Orchestras have received straight distinguished ratings at the KMEA Orchestra Assessment since 2012. The BSMS Orchestra Program has received the “KMEA Program of Excellence” Gold Award since 2012 and was a featured performed at the 2013 KMEA Conference in Louisville. The BSMS Orchestras have also competed at the Kings Island Music in the Parks competition in 2012, 2013 and 2016, each year receiving 1st place in their class and the best over-all orchestra award. Since 2012, the orchestra has grown from 45 members, to over 150 members.

Bryan Station Middle School is one of only two Fayette County schools who hosts the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra Friends in Music Program; an after-school mentoring program for students enrolled in the BSMS Orchestra. Through FIM, students receive scholarships for private lessons at the Central Music Academy and once a week mentoring and instruction from members of the CKYO Symphony Orchestra and the FIM Staff.

Bryan Station Orchestras have also been fortunate enough to receive free performances from various artists such as Time for Three, Eighth Blackbird, and the Harlem String Quartet, through the Lexington Philharmonic and the CKYO FIM program. Students also occasionally receive free tickets to the Chamber Music Festival of Lexington and Lexington Philharmonic Concerts. Guest conductors/clinicians have included Jeremy Mulholland from Eastern Kentucky University, Daniel Chatel from Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras and Scott Terrell from the Lexington Philharmonic.
